Choosing the Right Window Style for Energy Efficiency -
There are different types of window styles to choose from. This means that when shopping around for replacement windows, the style needs to be taken into account so that you can get the best one for your needs.
Of the several different types of window styles, there are three that stand out as the most popular. When you are considering installing windows that provide greater energy efficiency, it is important to take into account their style as well as other features.
Casement Windows
This type of window is very popular in places where wind is an issue, such as right here in Omaha. This particular type of design uses a crank that swings the window out so that it opens and when closed the seal is quite tight which prevents the wind from getting in if the design is properly constructed.
Double-Hung Windows
Arguably the most common, this traditional design is found in many homes across the country. In fact, they are the dominant type in houses and buildings that were constructed before World War II. This type of window design is where the bottom and top sashes slide up and down.
As far as energy efficiency goes, they are actually not a bad design in most climates and that includes the greater Omaha area. However, if not properly constructed they do have a tendency to let air in between the sashes which means in the dead of winter they may leak out the heat inside the home.
Picture Windows
This particular type of window is fixed shut which is good for energy efficiency if it is properly sealed around the frame. Plus, you can choose a glass type that is filled with inert gas that makes them even more energy efficient.
However, this type of window may not be desirable for egress and ventilation, but they do come in many different shapes and sizes which may be the perfect fit for your home. They are often used for large windows which would be too big to open, or in a room with other window styles that do open.
No matter which style you choose, even the best energy efficient windows need to be properly sealed. This means hiring a professional window installer who uses the right materials and knows how to install the window correctly for a tight seal.
