Project Spotlight: Southwest Omaha Custom Window Replacement

When Chris and Dave decided to upgrade the old windows in their Southwest Omaha home they chose United Services to install triple pane energy efficient replacement windows. A dark oak woodgrain interior was selected to match their home’s wood trim. The brown exterior window finish was chosen to compliment the house’s brick and tan siding. Color-matched colonial style grids add a stately finish to the windows.

In this project spotlight Chris and Dave share a review on how their project went, plus see before and after photos and learn more about their project.

Learn About Window Energy Efficiency

Hello, this is Mark. A quick window I want to show you. This is a ProVia Endure window. It’s a triple pane window which has three pieces of glass and double strength. There’s a single strength, there’s a double strength and there’s a triple strength you can buy. The thicker the glass the less sound that you’re going to hear in the house and the better energy efficient it is. Between each pane they either put argon or krypton gas in there for better density of air not coming in or going out for higher energy efficiency.

Hi, my name is Gary and I’m the window installer. We’re replacing some windows in the sun porch here for ease of operation and more energy efficiency.

So this is an old swing style barn sash with just a combination storm window on them. So the first thing I’m doing is removing the old barn sash by taking the hinges apart. Then we remove this, the storm window glass, as well as the frame.

So now we’ve got the barn sashes removed. We’ve got the storm window frame out. The next thing I will do is verify my measurement. Let’s make sure that our new window is going to fit. So we are 35 and 3/4 by 49 on this particular window. I have to cut this mulled stop off to make the window fit, so that will be my next thing to do.

Here’s our new window. First thing I do before installing is typically to take both sashes out, just makes it a little more friendly to handle. Once our frame is in place and we get it set where we want, grab the screw gun then we’ll attach it to the jamb with six screws – two top, two bottom and two middle. We’ve got pre-drilled holes here for them. Don’t want to tighten them too much because it will bow the jamb.

Our window frame is now installed. We got all the screws in so we can put it back together. We’re installed, operates well, locks work, doesn’t really need any adjustment. The last step will be to fill the cavity with expanding insulating foam and then putting a trim piece under to cover the void. There’ll also be an exterior cladding on the outside in aluminum.

Options to Consider When Replacing Your Windows

House with white replacement windows and patio door with grids

There are a number of choices to make when replacing your windows, between frame material, glass type, window style and decorative options. Our expert staff can help you choose the right window for your home. Here are some considerations to keep in mind:

Vinyl or Wood?

Vinyl replacement windows provide the best energy efficiency and are more affordable than wood. While wood windows provide a natural, stately look, they are more difficult to maintain, are more expensive and are often less energy-efficient. If you want the best of both worlds, consider a wood clad vinyl window such as ProVia’s Aeris window series that integrates a real wood interior with a vinyl exterior.

Upgrade Your Window Glass

If you still have older single-pane glass in your home, now is the time to upgrade your windows to double-pane or, even better, triple-pane glass.  Triple-pane windows insulated with argon gas or krypton gas will give you maximum energy efficiency to help save on your utility bills and make your home more comfortable.  The difference between single-pane and triple-pane windows is stark.

Window Styles

There are a variety of windows styles to choose from. Double-hung windows have two sashes which slide up and down. Casement and awning windows swing open on a single hinge – on casement windows the hinge is on the left or right and on awning windows the hinge is on the top or bottom. Picture windows are fixed glass that does not open. Then there are a variety of specialty window styles such as bow windows, bay windows and garden windows. You’ll want to choose the right window style that fits your ventilation needs, existing window openings and style preferences.

Decorative Options

Finally there are a number of decorative options to choose from. You can choose from a variety of color combinations and wood finishes. You could add designer grids that come in a variety of styles and configurations. If your window is in a bathroom, you may want to consider privacy glass which allows some light through, but doesn’t allow anyone to see in or out. Some windows have the option of adding window blinds between the panes of glass or decorative glass for an artistic flair.

As you can see, there are many choices to make when selecting new windows for your house. As an experienced Omaha window company we’re here to help you find the right windows that match your preferences and budget.

Difference Between Single Pane and Triple Pane Windows

Energy efficient triple pane window glass cutout

When it comes to getting greater energy efficiency out of your home there are a number of actions that you can take such as adding more insulation and sealing up cracks and spaces leading to the outside. However, one of the best ways to increase energy efficiency and save on your utility bills is to install windows with multiple panes of glass for greater insulation.

Single pane windows are fast becoming a thing of the past. They offer very little insulation because their one pane of glass easily transfers heat and cold from the outside of the home to the inside. In addition, they are not nearly as durable as double pane and especially triple pane glass, which is why most window companies are no longer offering single pane glass windows.

Triple pane windows have three pieces of glass with space between each sheet of glass that is filled with an inert gas which adds to the insulating qualities. These replacement windows are ideal for Omaha weather! Triple pane windows do carry a higher cost, but can save your money in the long run.

Why Triple Pane Windows Are Worth the Cost

There are a number of reasons why triple pane windows pay off in the long run, particularly if you are interested in saving on heating or air conditioning bills.

Greater Insulation: There is little doubt that triple pane windows offer considerably more energy savings thanks to the insulation properties. It is far more difficult for heat or cold to be transferred through the glass because of the triple panes and inert gas in-between. You can choose from Low-E/Argon gas or for even more efficiency Krypton gas.  Essentially, during the winter the home will heat up the interior sheet of glass while the cold on the outside will cool the exterior glass. The inert gasses and middle glass keep the outside sheets of glass separate which prevents the transfer of heat and cold.

Soundproofing: Double pane and and triple pane glass provide far greater soundproofing than single pane glass which makes them perfect for noisy neighborhoods. Plus, this helps keep the sound from going out as well as coming in which makes them well suited for townhouses or neighborhoods where the houses are close together.

Durability: Crafted from durable materials, triple pane glass will last far longer than its single pane counterparts under normal conditions. The toughness and durability factors mean that investing in triple pane glass pays off in the long run with fewer window replacements and greater energy savings. So, while the initial sticker shock may set some people back, the truth is that over the life of your window triple pane pays off for a number of reasons, especially in Omaha.

In the end, when you choose to better insulate your home by getting new windows, adding insulation in the walls and roof, or hiring a trusted Omaha window replacement company to help you out, it can save you money in the long run.
