Kitchen Cabinets Styling Guide: What's Your Style?

So, you’ve decided you want a new kitchen – you’ve spent some time clicking and exploring different ideas on Houzz, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. and you’re ready to get the ball rolling. Designing your new kitchen will be an exciting process in which your designer will ask you various questions to help you plan and build the kitchen of your dreams. Like everything else, designing a kitchen is not as simple as it seems and you as the homeowner will need to invest some time in making various decisions along the way to make sure every aspect of your kitchen is what you had envisioned and that it represents you.

One of those important decisions you will have to make has to do with the main part of your kitchen remodel: choosing your kitchen cabinets! This will help with setting the theme of your newly designed kitchen, so choose wisely.

There are three main cabinetry styling choices to consider when creating your custom-built kitchen cabinets: cabinet door style, cabinet finish and wood species.

1. Cabinet Door Styles

There are door styles for every design preference. Whether it is traditional, transitional, modern, rustic, minimalist, industrial and the list goes on! Dura Supreme, for example, has several different door styles to choose from, such as combinations from these three categories: flat panel, raised panel or slab (frameless); inset, full overlay or partial overlay; and beaded style, arched style or mullion style, to name a few.

2. Wood Species

Familiarize yourself with the type of wood species you want your cabinets to be made of. Wood is a beautiful product of nature and as such, we need to embrace all the different characteristics that come with each individual wood type, which is why it is important to view several cabinet wood samples and displays before making a final decision. Rustic hickory, for example, has a rustic appearance with knots (open or closed), burls, mineral streaks and pitch pockets. The color can also vary from creamy white to dark brown depending on the finish – more on that next. The following are some of the wood species you can choose from for your new cabinets: cherry, maple, oak, quarter-sawn red oak, knotty alder, hickory, rustic hickory, birch, beech, walnut, mahogany, ash, and alder. 3. Cabinet Finish

The final step to complete the look of your cabinets and ensure durability is to select a cabinet finish such as a: stain, glaze, stain/glaze, paint, paint/accent, paint/glaze, weathered, patina, and others. Dura Supreme, for example, offers hundreds of finish options to select from. Don’t worry – your professional designer can help you make the perfect choice to match your desired style. If you choose a paint finish for your cabinets from Dura Supreme your choices would be: white, classic white, linen white, antique white, pearl, silver mist, moonstone, zinc, cashmere, latte, storm grey, graphite, and black. If none of these color options appeal to you, than custom colors are available to match any preference. Explore more cabinet finish options here.
